Koh Samui Spa & Massage
Koh Samui has always attracted those in search of a place to relax and recharge, with many new age centres established years before Spas became mainstream. The alternative venues with liver fasting and meditation are still around, complemented by an increasing number of sophisticated new Spa resorts, many located in hotels.
Asian beauty secrets, traditional massage, de-stressing body treatments...Samui is the place to find them.
 Tamarind springs
Our proven recipe for relaxation: Take a tropical island coconut grove in the shade of a gently sloping mountain. Tuck a herbal steam room in between two huge rocks. Nestle a cold plunge pool nearby. Surround with lush natural landscape. Fold in an hour or two (or more...) of soothing massage with essential natural oils. Mix thoroughly. Garnish with a refreshing herbal drink. Repeat many times. Beautifully designed day spa in a spectacular hillside setting. Treatments are centred around massage (with some skin care treatments) and focus on back, neck and shoulders, as well as some fusion oil massage, hot stone massage and sport massage. All are offered in conjunction with a visit to their herbal steam room, which is impressively set between two huge boulders. There's also a café/juice bar and luxury accommodation available in eight spacious villas. Route 4169, Lamai, Tel. 077 424 221
Ko Somatics
Hanna Somatic Education was devised in the USA over twenty years ago and has been brought to Samui by Cynthia Lindway, one of only 80 certified practitioners in the world. Taught in either individual or group classes Somatics bears a superficial resemblance to yoga and is a highly developed, but relatively easy to learn, series of exercises designed to relieve pain and improve muscle control. It's application in pain relief can be quite startling - Cynthia's assistant Meredith Collard spent fourteen years in a wheelchair, as a result of a botched operation on her ankle and was told she's never walk again. Now thanks to several years of Somatics, she's fully mobile. Although all results won't necessarily be as dramatic as this, the course if well worth trying for anyone who suffers from persistent back, arm or leg pain. Baan Taling Ngam Spa
Situated within the confines of Samui's most exclusive resort, Baan Taling Ngam Spa provides a range of high end (and equally high priced) massages and body treatments. Spread over two levels - outside baths and private steam rooms are integrated in each suite, the spa has six luxury spa suites, set under traditional Thai Salas, which offer stunning panoramic views of the Gulf and Ang Thong National Marine Park. The spa is also one of the first in Thailand to use Vivified, or 'Chi', water. Created using special technology, 'Chi' water has a different molecular structure from normal water and studies apparently show that it increases detoxification, improves skin disorders, stimulates the immune system, improves metabolism and blood circulation, and enhances energy levels. Spa Samui Resorts
Spread over two locations in Lamai - one beachside and one in the hills, Spa Samui Resorts is now famous worldwide for its fasting and cleansing programmes, and kick-started the whole trend for alternative health spas with its opening in 1992. Fasting packages range from one day to seven days and are augmented by reflexology, meditation and yoga classes.
For the passing visitor there's also massages, including Thaiatsu, Aroma Oil and Healing Clay, facials and other treatments on offer. Their mostly vegetarian restaurant (same menu at both sites) was recently voted one of the fifty best restaurants in the world by an international magazine and serves a huge array of salads and health shakes unavailable elsewhere on the island. Accommodation is available at both locations although the hillside site is much newer and its bungalows are a higher quality than those on the beach. Lamai Beach and Route 4169, Tel. 077 230 976.
Four Seasons Tropical Spa
Chaweng has long cried out for a convenient spa, which doesn't offer only the unseemly kind of 'special' massages, and Four Seasons fills the gap nicely. Beautifully designed with lots of stone carvings, silk hangings and large jacuzzis, saunas, and baths, the Four Seasons offers a wide range of massages, wrap, facials and scrubs. Their signature 'Winter' massage uses hot stones to stimulate the lymphatic system to detoxify the body and is unavailable elsewhere on the island. There is also a nice selection of packages that combine three or four treatments at very reasonable prices. Central Chaweng, Tel. 077 414 141-3, Open 11am - 11pm.
